Ciências Blue and Green Biotechnology Workshop
ABOUT SYNERGIES
Harnessing blue & green biotech waves for a sustainable tomorrow
The Synergies workshops intend to be an annual event aimed to promote the research done by Ciências Researchers at the different Research Units in the field of Biotechnology, with a special emphasis on Blue and Green biotechnological solutions for a sustainable tomorrow. This includes (but is not limited to) research in biorefineries, biomimetics, bioremediation, biostimulants, biopesticides, added-value compound bioprospection, ecotechnologies, ecosystem restoration, food biotechnology, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, but also cutting-edge research in other biotechnological areas.
The 2024 Synergies Edition will be supported by the EEA Grants Project iSEA and will be focused on "Initiative towards sustainable macroalgae farming along European shores", and will have its emphasis on applied phycology, seaweed biotechnology, microbiology, food chemistry, economics, sociology and marine governance, with the presence of not only researchers but also relevant enterprises from the seaweed production sector.
Synergies'24 Speaks
Alexander Jüeterbock
Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University
Marine ecologist primarily interested in ecological and evolutionary responses of marine species to environmental change. Focuses on ecologically important non-model species, including macroalgae and seagrass.
Frank Neumann
in2sea
Frank Neumann is Civil Engineer (Marine structures) with initial experience of 12 years in ocean wave energy and coastal engineering. He was Associate Director of the Wave Energy Centre (now WavEC Offshore Renewables), which he helped to create. In 2012 he joined Seaweed Solutions (SES), where he was responsible for future large-scale offshore farming visions and the first Norwegian offshore farm. Since 2015 he is working part-time with SES as Technology Manager, and pursues strategic projects with the company in2sea Lda, which he is co-founder of.
Bernardo Duarte
Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon
MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Center
ARNET - Aquatic Research Network
Marine physiologist and ecotoxicologist with some research focus on the study of ecological, biochemical and molecular fingerprints in marine organisms under different environmental and anthropogenic stresses, namely contaminants, climate change and biotic stresses and how these can be used as phenotyping tools, ecotoxicological biomarkers and in biotechnological applications.
Ralf Rautenberger
Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO)
Develops his research with emphasis on Biotechnology and bioprospecting of macroalgae and microalgae and on the development of large-scale cultivation systems of marine macroalgae/seaweeds with low energy-consumption in Norway.
Aschwin H. Engelen
CCMAR - Centre of Marine Sciences
Marine Biologist mainly focus on biological marine invasions/proliferations of seaweeds affecting native seaweeds, seagrasses and corals. Descriptive and experimental ecology is combined with state-of-the-art molecular techniques. Currently, has directed his focus to the role of microbiomes associated with marine macro-organisms and their application potential. Microbiomes of corals, algae and seagrasses, interactions and uses for conservation, restoration, production and biotech.
Karin Andrea Wigger
Nord University Business School
PhD is a Researcher at Nord University Business School, Bodø, Norway. Her research interests include Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Peripheral Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship Education, Innovation, and the Circumpolar North—with a focus on tourism, fish farming, and the maritime industry.
Hin Hoarau Heemstra
Nord University Faculty of Social Sciences
Associate professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Nord University. She is currently the project leader of the international research project Sustainable Arctic Cruise Communities: from practice to governance (2020-2024), financed by the Research Council of Norway. She has academic interests and expertise in tourism innovation studies, post-humanism and animal ethics in tourism, sustainability and community development.

MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Center
ARNET - Aquatic Research Network
Catarina Frazão Santos is a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Animal Biology, University of Lisbon, an affiliated member of MARE-ULisboa, and an invited research associate at NOVA School of Business and Economics. Her primary research focus pertains to the multiple dimensions of ocean sustainability, particularly sustainable ocean planning and governance under global environmental change. She presently holds an ERC Starting Grant on Marine Spatial Planning in Polar Areas.
Margarida Martins
Innovation Coordinator, ALGAplus, SA
Margarida Martins has an academic background in the fields of Biotechnology, Food, and Chemical Engineering, having developed her PhD on the development of economic and environmentally friendly processes for biomass valorisation. Margarida is now, an innovation project manager at ALGAplus, S.A., being responsible for managing collaborative (national and international) and internal innovation projects.
